The Issue
For the past eight years, West Harrison has been more than just a campsite—it’s been a home away from home for my family and me. Located close to our home, it offers the perfect blend of safety, cleanliness, and natural beauty, making it an ideal retreat. Many improvements have been made over the years, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Sts’ailes Band, who have continually invested in the site. These commitments have transformed West Harrison into a cherished site for many families who seek a respite from the bustle of daily life.
However, the sudden closure of West Harrison campsites has disrupted this beloved tradition, affecting not only us but countless others who rely on these grounds for their recreational needs. The indefinite closure is linked to unresolved issues between the Sts’ailess Band and the province of British Columbia, calling for an urgent intervention to resolve the deadlock and honor the contracts made with the band. Sts’ailes is not able to reopen these sites until Rec sites and Trails BC have completed theor obligation to remove unsafe trees in the campsites.
The Sts’ailes Band has a longstanding history of diligent stewardship over these lands. They have invested both time and resources into making West Harrison a world-class camping destination. Reopening these campsites is not just a matter of restoring recreational opportunities; it is about respecting agreements and recognizing the substantial investments and promises made by the Sts’ailes Band to both residents and visitors.
We urge David EBY and the provincial government to intervene and broker a solution that reopens West Harrison campsites promptly. This action not only honors the province’s contractual commitments but also acknowledges the band’s contributions and the community’s attachment to these lands.
Let’s appeal to the provincial government to work collaboratively with the Sts’ailes Band in finding a transparent and swift resolution. By signing this petition, you stand with us in calling for action to ensure West Harrison campsites are reopened and the region’s rich tradition of welcoming campers is preserved. Please join us in this endeavor to have our voices heard and our beloved campsite returned.
Sign the petition and help restore our cherished West Harrison campsites.
